When Your Dog Bites a Young Child at a Coffee Shop

You are relaxing at the coffee shop and want to chill, possibly read a book and enjoy your Latte in peace without issues. Your best friend is also there with you, wagging his tail happily while looking around at the people.

Your dog can bite anyone. The most at-risk group is children 10 years of age. However, toddlers do not know how to approach a dog and are not steady on their feet. You can watch your dog. Unfortunately, it will be the bite you see as it takes only a split second.

Case in Point

Amy was hanging out with her husky Zion at the coffee shop. Subsequently, he is a large friendly dog and has never bitten a soul. Miranda visits the coffee shop often and has a four-year-old child named Maya.

Miranda gets an important phone call. Unfortunately, she is not paying attention to her young daughter. Maya sees Zion. Then, she decides to pet the doggy. As she approaches him, she trips, hitting him in the face. Not understanding what happened, Zion bites the arm that hit him.

Suddenly, Maya is screaming. Zion was simply protecting himself when he bit and had great bite restraint as the four puncture wounds are very shallow. Miranda shouts at Amy, stating that she has brought a dangerous dog out into public where he can attack.   Although Amy had Zion close to herself, she had not seen Maya moving behind her.

The police arrived as someone called them. Also, the EMTs and animal control show up. Maya is rushed to the hospital, where they x-ray her arm and then clean and bandage the wound. There are no stitches needed due to the minor nature of the bite. However, animal control seizes Zion with no answer to the question of when he will be released.

The situation goes from bad to worse when Amy receives the letter from Miranda’s attorney asking for $110,000 for medical, emotional, and permanent scarring.

Amy’s has homeowners insurance coverage. However, it is limited to $25,000. The insurance company will handle the lawsuit up to that limit.   Amy must hire her own lawyer and pay for any damages above 25,000.
